A CAMERA ON HAMPSHIRE

WELCOME to my website and a portfolio of heritage and landscape photographs from Hampshire, especially in and around my home city of Winchester.

I am a retired zoologist with a passion for the countryside, and for photography as a long-standing, serious hobby. In particular, I enjoy capturing the differing moods of the natural world that come with changing seasons, times of day and the weather. Quality rather than quantity is my objective – I spend many happy hours looking for just the right composition, and yet more deciding when best to return, sometimes weeks or months away. Some favourite spots receive many visits since the scene is rarely the same twice.

My former camera kit comprised a 35mm Bessa R2 with Leica lens, a Nikon system, a medium format Pentax 67 system, and a large format Wista 5 x 4 that also incorporated a 6 x 9 sliding back. Prior to 2005 all my work was film based, using Fuji Velvia or Provia. My first experience of digital was with a Nikon D200 which proved to be an impressive camera - as well as greatly reducing the load I had to carry in the field! Seeking to upgrade the sensor technology I purchased a Nikon D7000 which I used most of the time with a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM lens. At present I have a Nikon D610 with a Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8G ED. I also have a number of prime Nikon lenses from the days of film photography - and, sadly, a cupboard full of lovely, quality cameras and lenses that no longer get an outing.
